The East Newark School District is dedicated to supporting the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of all students, including those with disabilities or those who require accommodations. In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and New Jersey Administrative Code (N.J.A.C. 6A:14), the district provides a full continuum of special education and related services to ensure that all students receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE).
The district’s Supervisor of Special Services oversees the coordination of all special education programs. Students who qualify for support through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan receive services and accommodations designed to remove barriers to instruction and promote full participation in school programs, while addressing their unique learning needs in the least restrictive environment.
East Newark’s Child Study Team (CST) includes a school psychologist, social worker, learning disabilities teacher-consultant, and speech-language specialist. This multidisciplinary team collaborates with families and school staff to evaluate, identify, and support students throughout the IEP or 504 process.
The district also participates in Project Child Find, a statewide initiative designed to identify, locate, and evaluate children ages 3 through 21 who may have developmental delays or disabilities and require special education services. Children between the ages of 3 and 5 who demonstrate delays in communication, motor skills, social-emotional development, or cognitive functioning may qualify for services at no cost to families. These services are tailored to support each child’s individual development in the least restrictive environment.
